Previous Night, think of the Divine Mother - Goddess Lakshmii and mentally decide to perform
puujaa the next day. This is the sankalpa. Invite your relatives, friends (who have bhakti
in the Goddess) for the puja.
Next day early morning keep the same thoughts of worshipping the Goddess and take a head-bath
(if possible an oil-bath). Observe Fast (if possible). Decorate the front door, altar and
the place near the altar. Make appropriate kolam / rangoli / alpana / chowk. Keep all the
things for puujaa ready, near the altar. Wash Kalasha and fill it with clean water upto
3/4 of it. Cover and place it near the altar.
Have some soothing Indian Music (Shehnai or sa.ntuur or sitaar or naadasvaram - preferably
any instrumental) going on in the background till the puujaa begins. The music should be
pleasing (not too loud) for creating a serene mood. (Of course people should be internally
peaceful also!)
Those who are not directly performing the puja may participate by listening to puja or
reading it mentally from printed handouts. They should take part by repeating the naama
puujaa, aShTottara puujaa etc. as instructed by the puja leader. At other times they may
sing some bhajans to please the Divine Mother. The puja time should not be used for
socializing / gossip etc. but rather for focussing our thoughts on the all merciful Lord.
